Dealing with Depression

Depression isn’t prejudice it affects all types of people young, and old. Majority of depressed individuals keep their disease a secret afraid of the ridicule from their loved ones and the negative portrayal that comes with being depressed. A friend of mine was with her boyfriend for over 4 years. He had been sad here and there but never anything too drastic. He would drink too much, or experiment with drugs to help make things easier to deal with. She had no idea just how badly he was hurting mentally and his depression finally took over. He took his own life in the apartment they shared.

Feeling hopeless, and like you can’t get out of bed every morning is the start of it. In order to break the cycle of staying in that dark state of mind you have to try to stay positive. You can do this by surrounding yourself with friends and family and doing things that you enjoy. Most people with depression depend on Medication that helps to balance their serotonin levels. People who are depressed have less serotonin than those who are not. Along with psychotherapy and guidance from those who care most, depression can be coped with and sometimes but not always cured.

There are hotlines that people can call if they are feeling depressed and even crisis centers. These crisis centers can be found in emergency rooms. Doctors assist in helping people who admit themselves to the crisis center with evaluation and testing to see if they need to be hospitalized for their depression or if they can be discharged with a plan to see a counselor and take meds.

People who do not understand depression need to research this mental illness further and learn the facts. It is not something that can be easily controlled and it is something that needs attention. People take their own lives every day from losing to this battle. Depression doesn’t have to be a death sentence-love, support, medication and counseling can put people on the track to getting better if they just seek the appropriate help.
